Suggested Reading

Grotius, Hugo. Freedom of the Seas, or The Right Which Belongs to the Dutch to Take Part in the East Indian Trade (Mare Liberum) (1608), trans. Ralph Van Deman Magoffin. New York: Oxford University Press, 1916. Reprinted, New York: Arno Press, 1972. Everyone talks about this book, but hardly anyone reads it. It is a pleasure to read Magoffin’s elegant translation, and the ideas are fresh and stimulating.

Guberlet, Muriel. Explorers of the Sea: Famous Oceanographic Expeditions. New York: Ronald Press, 1964. Although this book was written for older children, adult readers will enjoy the personalized stories of great ocean explorers and their scientific discoveries. It’s a great read.

Oxman, Bernard, David Caron, and Charles Buderi, eds. The Law of the Sea: U.S. Policy Dilemma. San Francisco: ICS Press, 1983. A good introduction to the issues leading up to UNCLOS III, with an appendix summarizing the third Law of the Sea Conference.

Peterson, M. J. “International Fisheries Management,” in Institutions for the Earth: Sources of Effective International Environmental Protection, eds. Peter Haas, Robert O. Keohane, and Marc A. Levy, 249–305. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 1993. A concise and current account of international fisheries management, with a focus on the economic aspects.
