More About the Glass Mountain

Many folks who grew up on fairy tales remember a glass mountain appearing somewhere, but few ever remember “Old Rinkrank,” probably the most famous of the glass mountain stories (and one that actually had a happy ending!).

I featured this Grimms’ tale on Episode 30 of Princess Alethea’s Fairy Tale Rants and came away with a lot of questions. Who exactly “made” this glass mountain, and why? Crotchety old Rinkrank was already in residence when the princess fell in—how did he get there? How long had he been there? Why on earth would he have needed a cleaning lady? And if there was a door inside the mountain the whole time (through which Rinkrank returned every evening), why did they depend solely on the magic ladder in Rinkrank’s pocket to escape?

The original fairy tales often leave me asking questions like this, at which point I feel compelled to insert logic back into the story. Logic that, in this instance, tied beautifully into my new series, The Border Court…

…which was supposed to launch last year, but ended up having some worldbuilding problems, so I had to go back to the drawing board. (Namely, I was so excited about knowing a thousand years of the history of Arilland, I tried to shove it all into the first four chapters.)

Instead, the next magical story to come out of this particular world ended up being “The Goblin and the Treasure,” which you can now read in the gorgeous anthology Once Upon a Quest!

Those who are familiar with “Old Rinkrank” (hats off to you, my friends!) will note that my ending differs slightly from the source material, but with good reason, and still keeps the integrity and optimism of the Grimms’ tale intact.

I fell in love with this story so hard…I do believe “Old Rinkrank” is my new favorite fairy tale. I hope it becomes yours as well!
