CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The Boss stared at his schedule from The Board and checked off Phase One: the explosion. He smiled. It was easy; all I did was collect the information The Board wanted.

He checked off the data he delivered to The Board: the overall impact of the blast, how widespread the outage extended, the reaction of the people impacted by the outage, and the amount of time it took to return to partial then full service. I don’t know what they needed it for and don’t care.

All I care about is that The Board gave me the opportunity for my people to be ready and move over forty thousand kilos of drugs north after the explosion. The Board guaranteed the explosion and the outage would overwhelm law enforcement resources, and they were right; the entire operation was smooth, profitable, and unhindered.

He continued down his list: next task on my list for The Board is to order the pickup; he checked that off. After that, the delivery.

After Howie’s call, The Boss alerted his contacts at a bogus delivery company. “Drop the boxes off at the first address.”

An unmarked box truck delivered five refrigerator-sized boxes to the electronics store at closing time, when it was too late to log them in to the inventory system.

Four hours later, the burglary crew disabled the security system and cameras. They loaded the five large boxes, the entire stock of solar-powered chargers, and everything else they could get into their delivery truck before their allotted on-scene time of ten minutes expired. They left the back door locked and secured.

The Boss parked his car at the warehouse to wait for the burglary crew. They’re good—not quite as good as Team Three, but close. Almost sorry about Team Three, but no loose ends with Phase One was critical.

The Boss removed his paisley tie, rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt, and helped unload the truck at the warehouse. It was important to him to show he was not afraid to work. Plus, it gave him a firsthand opportunity to examine the delivery. The real purpose of the break-in was to pick up the boxes that were not in the store inventory. The chargers for his crews were a bonus.

He was concerned about the large boxes because they belonged to The Board. He didn’t know what was in them and didn’t care. He was another well-paid link in the untraceable supply chain that moved the boxes toward their destination.

Boxes are undamaged—not a crease. I can breathe when they’re picked up in two hours.

The Boss collected passwords and other information for The Board. He didn’t have any details for Phase Two, but he sent his wife and family to her parents’ home two states away and positioned an even larger inventory of drugs ready to move. The Board promised him four hours’ notice.

He heard a buzz of similar activity from associates in California, Texas, Chicago, and the Northeast. The consensus was that The Board planned a disruption, if not a collapse, of the U.
