Leroy was happy to get through another day, without any major incidents, at least, any that concerned his job. He was physically exhausted, but he was motivated by the promise the night held. As was his usual practice now, he was going to see Megan. This time, they were going to his house. Since Megan floated the idea to him, Leroy could not get it out of his mind.

He saw a familiar figure walking ahead of him. Leroy would not have been bothered by her until that afternoon. His first instinct was to slip away, before she turned and saw him. He just wanted to quietly wind down the night and avoid any more uncomfortable situations.

“Dr Adams!”

Leroy froze, as he heard a voice that he learned to roll his eyes at, holler his name. He could see Giselle turning to look at him through his peripheral vision, as he answered Connor’s call.

“I’m not deaf, Connor. You didn’t have to shout my name. I’m sure people heard you all the way in Alaska.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment, thank you. I haven’t seen you around much lately. Hope you’re good.”

“I am. Thanks for asking.”

“My pleasure. I try to make sure everyone is alright on my team. I take it you are doing good, right?”

“Excellent. I don’t have any complaints.”

Connor raised one eyebrow, a skill that Leroy wished he had, before he continued. “Really? Nothing? You can’t think of one thing wrong?”

“Nothing,” Leroy insisted.

“You don’t even need a partner? On a temporary basis until we resolve the entire Marilyn fiasco? I’m sure she’s innocent, isn’t she?”

“As far as I know. And no, I can handle the responsibilities just fine.”

“I know you can. I just have to do my part as the selfless team leader that I am.”

“I’m sure you are,” Leroy answered, unimpressed.

He turned to leave when Connor put an arm on his shoulder.

“If there’s something you think I should know, it’s not too late for you.”

“Thank you.”

Leroy left Connor standing in the corridor, with a smile on the latter’s face. He seemed to enjoy being a dick, more than anything else.

Giselle was standing by the elevator when Leroy got there. He could not just catch a break!

“Giselle,” he greeted, and pressed the elevator button. He waited in silence for the contraption’s door to open so that he could leave every stressor in his life behind.

Giselle shifted, from one leg to the other, beside Leroy. He could tell that she was uncomfortable with his presence, but there was nothing he could do to help her. After everything she caused, the least she could do was learn to live with her conscience.

The door finally opened, with a chime. The elevator was empty when it arrived. Leroy rolled his eyes at his rotten luck. He now had to contend with the awkward silence that was sure to continue, on their way to the ground floor.

“Good evening, Leroy,” Giselle finally said, as the door shut.

“Good evening.”

“About earlier today,”

“Don’t worry about that,” Leroy interrupted her.
