CHAPTER 26

“VERY well,” Ben said.

We all began to listen. “Every year, the Valiant City would do a celebration in honor of the warriors that fought in the wars. My little sister, Lucy, and I would always be a part of it. There was dancing and games. One of them was a race to see how far a Valiant could fly” he remembered out loud, chuckling to himself.

His smile slowly disappeared, almost as if one of those haunting memories had flown back into his mind.

“That year though, something felt different. The leader of the Valiant Army, Alexander knew that a threat was on its way to the Wizard World. A threat that would sooner or later effect the Valiant City. Some feared we should cancel the gathering that night. Alexander felt that it would put everyone’s minds at ease with one night of fun. So he put guards all over the City, in case there were any raids. But, even with the best guards in the army, nothing would have stopped what happened next.”

Ben started to fiddle with his fingers and continued to tell his story.

“There was a fire down in the dark forest. It was spreading like wild. Everything we knew started to burn away and disappear without a trace. None of us could stop it. I was the first to notice how close it was us and started to yell. As loud as I could, I yelled for help. Some Valiants and I tried to save as many families as we could, but it wasn’t enough. Then um—” he stopped, starting to get choked up. “I walked back to the main grounds and saw that there was nothing but ash, burned bodies lying dead, and all the life in that City was gone. I noticed a scarf lying on the grass. I remembered the colors clear as day. Blue and yellow with flowers. That scarf belonged to my sister. It was Lucy’s. As I examined it, I saw it was scorched.”

Oh, my god, I thought, I know where this is going.

She’s dead.

I started to shed a tear.

“She didn’t make it. Poor Lucy didn’t make it. I knew it was him though. I thought that he hired a rogue Dramidah to do the work for him. Damian always had a hate for Valiants. Saying we’re not warriors. That we’re just creatures that don’t deserve to be honored as allies. After that day, I just never felt the same. Knowing that I couldn’t save my sister made me feel lost. My noble place in Valiant Army was disconnecting. I felt like I didn’t belong anymore. So, I decided to leave and never turn back. I signed up to the Academy as a mentor and I have been here ever since. My parents died when me and Lucy were little. So, it was just the two of us all those years.”

Jenny was the first to ask exactly what I was thinking. “Did you ever go back to the Valiant City? Reclaim your place in their army?”

Ben shook his head in disappointment.
