Finding a place to park in the busy downtown area was a challenge, and we finally picked a space in front of the Victorian house. It meant a walk of a few blocks, but after sitting in the car for so long, it was nice to move around. I looked at Bernie and realized the major flaw in our plan.

The festival was in full swing, which meant there were hundreds of people walking around. The last thing I wanted was for Bernie to get stepped on or injured. Annette’s warning about pets had me worried as well. I couldn’t handle it if something happened to my beloved cat and helper. My arms tightened around him, and he squiggled as Zane pulled in front of the house. Sophie and Tabby piled out of the car and walked towards the house.

“I’ll be fine. I have ways of avoiding trouble,” Bernie said, sensing where my mind was going.

“But, Bernie, I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

He narrowed his eyes and lashed his tail, a sure sign I was in for a major ear chewing. I glanced at Zane for help, or at least for moral support, but he looked torn.

“Maybe we can just roll the window down far enough that he can get back in the vehicle if he needs a place to go?” Zane asked.

“I don’t know. I just don’t think it’s a good idea for Bernie to be running loose downtown.”

Bernie heaved a kitty sigh and closed his eyes.

“Brynn. We’ve been over this. I’m not your average cat. I have ways of making sure no one sees me or senses me. I think it’s necessary for me to watch your back. If you leave me in here, I’m going to get out.”

“What’s he saying?”

I relayed Bernie’s message to Zane, and he nodded thoughtfully.

“He’s got a point. He can be our eyes on the ground. I have faith in his abilities, Brynn.”

“I do too,” I said, coming dangerously close to whining. “But I don’t want him to get hurt.”

“We’ve dealt with wraiths, evil ghosts, serial killers, and various other dregs of the supernatural world,” Bernie said. “I think I can handle avoiding some families out for a fun night on the town. I’m going, whether you say it’s okay. I know I need to be out there tonight.”

I frowned, surprised by his adamant statement. This wasn’t like my cat at all. Okay, he was persnickety and snarky on a good day, but this? This was something new.

“Well, if you put it like that. Please promise you will be careful, and if you need anything, you’ll come find me.”

He purred loudly and bumped my chin with his head while leaning on my chest. It was impossible to say no to him.

I opened the door, and he was off like a shot, streaking down the street so fast I lost track of him within seconds. Zane rubbed my hand and smiled, his eyes crinkling.

“It’s better to let him have free rein than have him get hurt trying to get out of the vehicle.
