Chapter Twelve

Stanisław and Piotr picked up Tatyana and Nostradamus at six the following day to get an early start. No one spoke much at the beginning of the drive. Tatyana struggled not to fall asleep as Piotr negotiated through rush hour traffic. Nostradamus sat on the seat beside his mistress, enjoying the view. Once they had cleared the city and the road opened, Stanisław initiated small talk.

“Sorry for the delay. Every year, the traffic in Warsaw gets worse.”

“This is nothing. You should see it in New York City or Los Angeles.”

“I guess it’s one of the downsides of capitalism.” Stanisław laughed at his own joke, then glanced into the rearview mirror. “I assume you’ve figured out a way to exorcise the ghosts at Treblinka.”

Tatyana did not correct him. “Yes. Every spirit that is stuck at Treblinka met terrifying, violent deaths. Their spirits are still scared and confused. Once I clear the camp of its bad essence, I can encourage them to move on into the afterlife.”

“It’s that simple?”

“Surprisingly, yes. Sometimes all the spirits need is for someone to recognize their suffering and give them permission to depart.”

“Then this will be a boring chapter in your memoirs.”

“Memoirs?”

“Yes. You are writing memoirs about your cases, aren’t you?”

“Honestly, I hadn’t thought about it until you mentioned the idea.”

“You’d make a lot of money. I hear those books are best sellers in your country. Who knows, you might even get your own reality TV show someday.”

God, I hope I never sell out like that, thought Tatyana.

“If you do get your own show, have me on an episode. My mother would be so proud to see her son on American television.” Stanisław chuckled at the idea.

“It’s a deal.”

Nostradamus yawned, curled up on the seat beside his mistress, and took a nap. Tatyana agreed that it was a good idea.

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to take a nap.”

“No problem. I’ll wake you when we arrive.”

The lulling motion of the car quickly put her to sleep.

* * *

“We’re here.”

Tatyana opened her eyes as they entered the lot and parked near the museum.

“How long have I been asleep?”

“Over an hour.”

“So much for a short nap.”

She stretched her arms, loosening the kinks in her neck and shoulders. As she did, Piotr opened the rear door. Nostradamus jumped out and raced over to the closest tree. Tatyana climbed out next. Beata stood nearby.

“Welcome back, Miss Reynolds.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“I was so excited when Stanisław called to say you were returning today. After what happened last time, I was afraid you might not want to.”

“I don’t give up easily.”

Finished with his business, Nostradamus wandered around the parking lot, sniffing the area. Tatyana clapped the side of her leg three times.

“Come here, boy.”

He raced over, his tail wagging. Tatyana attached the leash to his harness.

Tayana gave Stanisław and Beata one bloodstone each and attached the third, which she had placed in a small leather pouch, to Nostradamus’ collar. She would keep the last two for herself.

“What are these?” asked Stanisław.

“They’re bloodstones, crystals that will protect you from the darkness lingering here.
