âDad, it was so cool,â Eddy told his father. âI was really flying.â
âSounds like you had an interesting day.â The chief chuckled. He sat in a recliner while Walt and Danielle sat on the sofa together, each holding a baby, while Eddy sat on the fireplace hearth with his brother.
âIt was all fun and games until Lily called,â Danielle said with a snort. âWe should have shut the front blinds. I saw June and Kelly were across the street. But I didnât imagine they could see inside the living room window from over there. Of course, I didnât consider June would find Ianâs binoculars and become a peeping tom.â
âWhat did they say?â the chief asked.
âThey didnât say anything to us. But when they stopped by the hospital after leaving here, they told Lily and Ian about it. Lily convinced them it was one of Waltâs magic tricks.â
âAnd Danielle told me that if anyone asked how he did it,â Eddy chimed in, âIâm to say I canât give away a magicianâs secrets.â
âWhich really isnât lying,â Danielle said. âWaltâs secret was using Marieâs energy.â Danielle didnât mention Waltâs energy because the mediums and the chief had agreed not to say anything about Waltâs background or gifts to Eddy. They worried that might be too much for the teenager to absorb all at once.
âWhile you were over here doing magic tricks, I was having a conversation with the Bowman twins,â the chief told Walt and Danielle.
Before Walt or Danielle could respond, Wesley appeared in the middle of the living room.
âWhat are you doing here?â Danielle asked.
The chief arched his brows. âI assume youâre not talking to me?â
âItâs that ghost who followed Eddy and me back from the pier,â Evan told his father.
âHeâs here?â Eddy asked in a loud whisper.
Evan pointed to where the ghost stood.
âPlease hear me out,â Wesley urged. âI obviously chose the wrong medium.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Danielle asked.
âI should have gone to him first.â Wesley pointed to Evan. âHis father is the police chief. Thatâs who can help me. Itâs his job to stop a murder.â
âThe chief already knows about your request,â Danielle said.
Wesley frowned. âHe does?â
âYes. And like us, he needs more information. Letâs pretend you were still alive and go directly to the chief, telling him Adrian planned to marry Bonnie for her money before killing her. He canât do anything unless you tell him everything you can to support your claim.â
âThatâs a poor analogy,â Wesley snapped. âFor one thing, I already told you why, for the money. And two, if I were alive, I would still be married to Bonnie, so Adrian couldnât marry her, anyway.â Wesley disappeared.
âHeâs gone,â Evan announced.
âWhat was that all about?â the chief asked.
âSame thing. He wants to stop his brother from marrying his widow.â Danielle looked at Evan. âIf he comes back later and asks you to get your father to do something, remind him your father already knows everything, and unless he has additional information, thereâs nothing any of us can do.
