Chapter Seventeen
Back in the drawing room, the windows closed â but freshly broken panes letting in the cold and smatterings of rain â Verity paced a groove with another unfiltered cigarette in hand. Her brother stood by the empty fireplace, trying to appear as casual as possible, but at the same time barrel chested and unyielding. Despite him trying his best to hide it, his arrogance was showing dents in the bodywork.
âYou said you could control it,â she snarled at him. âThat it didnât matter if the box was opened, you could stop it and hurl it back in. This is what you promised me, Wilberforce.â The way she said his name was like the gravest insult she could conceive.
Desperately, Iâd tried to get to Quince, but the room had remained firmly shut. Iâd pushed at the door, kicked it, shoved it with every ounce of my weight and there had been no give. I could imagine a reinvigorated red smog holding it shut the other side. There was no sound of cackling, but undoubtedly Lord Killamurray was enjoying itself.
âHeâs of no interest to that thing.â Wilberforce had assured, but I wasnât going to listen to him when it came to looking after others.
I had continued trying to force the door, my boot leaving imprints in the wood, but there was no give.
It was only when Ludo placed his hand to my arm that I backed away. The Wains were going, both of them heading downstairs. Verityâs shoulders slouched.
âItâs regrettable, Garris,â Ludo said. âIt is. But right now, how much good do you think weâre going to do for him if we did get in there?â
So, we had been led to the drawing room again, where the evening had begun. The coffin no longer glowed a spectral blue light. It glistened red, as if it had been coated with entrails in our absence.
Verity spat her cigarette onto the floorboards and ground it under her heel. She hadnât smoked any of it and I wondered if sheâd merely lit it for effect. âWeâre trying to make the right impression here, brother dearest. What we are supposed to have is the ability to capture ghosts. Not merely a large box which once contained ghosts. We were going to offer the lessons to catch them again and again. Or at least, thatâs what I thought we were offering. The prospectus I intended to sell, anyway. Only if it turns out we donât have that, we might as well burn this place down and head to the damn poor house. We are trying to make the right impression, and unfortunately your cack-handedness isnât succeeding.â
Wilberforce chuckled softly. âRelax, sister dearest. Itâs a hiccup.â
âA hiccup? Youâve never seen our ancestor the way Iâve seen him.â
But Wilberforce ignored her. âThese men understand that what weâre doing isnât a straightforward process. Weâre dealing with elements way beyond the normal. Believe me, weâre in control and when we demonstrate how much control, weâll be able to double our price. Triple it!â
âHow?â
âIâm going to keep us safe tonight.
