In particular, there is currently no reason to doubt that the Energiewende will fulfil the most important of its underlying motives, to reduce CO2 emissions in the long term.

12.1.3 Final Remarks on This Issue

1.Since the German fossil power plants—especially the hard coal-fired power plants—are increasingly less utilized to serve domestic electricity demand due to increasing quantities of RE electricity, while simultaneously being actually competitive when compared to similar power plants in neighbouring countries, they are increasingly producing electricity for export. Thus, they increasingly oust electricity from foreign power plants. This gives rise to some confusion on the matter. Most official statistics relating to CO2 emissions do not distinguish between CO2 emissions due to domestic demand for electricity and CO2 emissions due to electricity exports, although the latter lead to a similar extent to the reduction of CO2 emissions abroad (Table 12.3).Table 12.3CO2 emissions from electricity generation, official statistics from the German Environment Agency (in mio t)
