Chapter Six

“Holly? Rule? Come back and say yer farewells to Father Stewart, aye?”

They stared at each other for a few seconds, then wandered back into the kitchen where the grill had warmed the room even though she’d turned it off. Or maybe it wasn’t the room. Maybe it was just her.

The priest already had his coat on.

“You won’t stay for pancakes and eggs?”

“Nay, lass, but thank ye. One of us has to go placate Mrs. Jorgenson.” He gave George a pointed look, pushed his hat onto his head, and hurried out into the rain again.

George grinned. “He’s displeased. I told him I’m leaving the house to the kirk, in my will, with the stipulation that it never be sold to William Jorgensen.” He laughed. “But it’s not from a meanness of spirit, mind. All of Tighnabruaich kens that Tilly’s in a rush to see me gone so her son can buy the place. But it’s poor William I’m thinking of. If he isnae allowed to buy this house, he’ll never have to tell his ma that he doesnae wish to live within shouting distance of her.”

Rule took the father’s seat at the table. “Ye’re certain the son feels this way?”

George snorted. “Every time we speak. Truth be told, it might be William’s fault I’ve lived as long as I have, with him prayin’ so hard for my continued health. Maybe now, he can leave me out of his prayers and let me go.”

Thanks to the bowl of batter resting for a long time, the pancakes were extra fluffy. Rule acted as if he’d never seen them before and marveled at the holes running through the sides. Maybe George was less impressed because his wife hadn’t cooked them. But they both laughed when Rule lifted his plate in the air, then tipped it to drink the leftover maple syrup.

While she washed up, George directed Rule to a small toolbox and took him around the house fixing odds and ends that he was too old and stiff to do himself. It was one or two in the afternoon when they all gathered in the living room, opened the blinds, and sat back to guess what the dark clouds had in store for the afternoon.

Holly and George sat on the couch facing the window, Rule sat in a large chair off to one side that faced both the couch and the fireplace against the outer wall. She supposed she ought to head to the dock and see if any boats would brave the rain to take her to Oban, but she wanted to know what the other two were thinking first.

It was tempting to stay. Despite the run-in with Tilly that morning, she’d enjoyed the positive vibe of the house, which emanated from both men. It was the complete opposite of the house she’d lived in all her life, ten years of which she’d lived alone with her mother. But the vibe had nothing to do with male or female because George’s house had a female presence in the spirit of Judith Johnstone.
