Shri awoke suddenly, not remembering her whereabouts. A pair of eyes stared at her only a few inches away. She stumbled up, screaming, and her hand groped for her blade.
âStop it!â a familiar voice cried. âStop screaming! Itâs only me!â
Shri stood up, the sword in her hands pointing at Dago. He looked tired but unharmed. Javid stood behind him, his curved blades resting on both sides of Dagoâs neck. He had been fast.
Dagoâ lifted his hands in a sign of surrender. âTell your friend that you are myââ
Javid hissed at him. âDonât tell her what to do!â
Shri lowered her blade and nodded at Javid. âHe is my friend.â
Though Javid lowered his blades, he remained alert, leering at the newcomer. Dagoâs sleeve was ripped, revealing a nasty cut on his arm.
âOf course weâre friends,â he said.
Shri put her blade back in its sheath and grabbed her possessions from the ground. She attempted to clear her head, but the cave felt crowded. âIâm glad to see you, Dago,â she said, âeven if the last few times weâve spoken, you havenât been yourself. I donât have time for your mood swings.â
A bright orange sky bled through the gaps of the small cave. Nightmares of her parents and Susu burning in the fire had tormented her throughout her sleep, but like smoke fading from a fire, the morning light chased the dreams away.
Shri glanced at Dago under her brows. He looked different. She couldnât tell how or why, but he seemed harder than he had just a few days ago. Javid approached Shri and placed his hand protectively on her arm. Shri shook it off.
âStop doing that, Javid.â
âIs he bothering you, Shri?â Dago said, shooting Javid another glare. âI can get rid of him for you. Easily.â
Shri backed up a step pointed a finger at them. âStop right there. This is not a wise idea. Iâll go now. Alone.â She backed up some more. âI wish you both well on your journey through the gates.â Taking a deep breath, she nodded determinately. âGoodbye.â
Traveling the gates with someone would be a relief, but also very foolish. She had thought that seeing Dago would make her feel better, but it made her feel worse. Dago could die. Javid Boudot could die. Did she want to witness such things? Could she handle it? She had to focus on her own journey, and having companions... It wasnât smart. So, she steeled herself and exited the cave.
She climbed down from the rock as the orange sky turned a brighter blue. The sun peeked out behind the thick leaves and green bushes. The air was amazing. It was so fresh and clean and moist. The cave wasnât very high up, and she made it down with little trouble. Checking her items, she glanced around for a tree she could climb, finding one to her left. She had taken only a few steps toward it when she heard footsteps from behind. She turned to find Javid and Dago staring thoughtfully.
Shri sighed. âI told you that I want to do this alone.
