believe that s/he was in immediate lethal danger. Like anybody else, a police officer has the right to defend her or himself (and others) against lethal threat with lethal force.

Looking at the use of force equipment in the light of the above scale, one can justifiably say that it is just as difficult to give up firearms as talking. Although no police force operates without firearms, there are excellent tactical solutions, like those used by Norway and the United Kingdom, where not all police officers carry guns.

Carrying a gun increases work safety, but only if the officer is proficient in handling it. If all officers are armed, there is a loaded gun present in every situation they face. On the other hand there is currently no other effective instrument of defence against a knife which can cause deep stab and large slash wounds with the risk of lethal loss of blood and severe injury to internal organs. Demanding an officer to use only a baton or an irritant spray in this situation would be inhumane and unreasonable.

It is often suggested that if police do not carry guns the criminals would feel no need to arm themselves and would not use guns against the police. The situation is not that simple. Most criminals arm themselves for protection against their own kind. It is a fallacy to believe that their actions are governed by rationality and that they would not use a gun to escape a desperate situation.
