Ligatures

Various character combinations are set as separate characters (top) and with ligatures (bottom). Ligatures prevent the collision or interference of characters, particularly the extended finial of the ‘f‘ and the dot of the ‘i’.

Diphthongs

The fusion of two vowels into a single character that represents a unique pronunciation, are rarely used in print today. An example is encyclopædia, in which the diphthong is commonly replaced by a single ‘e’. Also known as a gliding vowel.
