Luca, Yazmine, and Zane hurried from the cave.

“Frozen Sea, here we come!” Zane said cheerily. “Luca, we can use the egg’s map to find our way there. Yaz, you can follow me and Luca from above.”

Luca stared at Zane. “Aren’t you flying with Yazmine?”

“No, I’m going to run there. I’m superfast, after all.” Zane grinned as he headed for the edge of the platform. “I’ll race you!”

Luca sighed. The Frozen Sea was a long way away. And he really did not want to race Zane. But Zane had the map, and he couldn’t risk losing sight of him.

“Good luck, you two,” called Yazmine, rising elegantly into the air. “I have a feeling you’re going to need it.”

Zane and Luca headed down the mountain path. There was no doubt Zane was speedy. Superhumanly speedy! But he also wasted a lot of time. Once they were down the mountain and into the forest, Zane kept zipping off in different directions. He would disappear for a few minutes, then suddenly leap out from behind a boulder or a tree to try to scare Luca.

It never worked, though. Luca had amazing hearing as a beast. Besides, the forest birds kept Luca informed as to where Zane was at all times. Luca just concentrated on running at a steady pace. Sure, he wasn’t as fast as Zane, but he felt like he could keep running forever.

In time, the forest began to thin out. The temperature dropped, and snow grew thicker. The sun was setting now, and the light made the snow shimmer.

Zane ran up from the opposite direction, his face alive with excitement. “Just wait until you see what’s up ahead!”

The track curved around to the left. Luca stopped short, amazed. Off in the distance, a massive wave curved up into the darkening sky. Luca held his breath, waiting for it to crash. But the wave didn’t move.

Luca squinted at the horizon. “The Frozen Sea!” He’d never seen anything so strange and magical. As he ran forward, more arches of bluish ice rose up, all looking as if they were about to fold back into themselves at any moment. But instead, they remained perfectly still. It was like time had stopped.
