One moment everything worked perfectly on the island, and then it didn’t. We had electricity, and then, two days into our stay, zap—power was gone. A bullet zinging past our ears and lodging into the wall couldn’t have shocked us more. Innocents that we were, we had flooded the house with light; not a mistake we would make twice.
The previous owner told Neil, when he called, that the power seldom went out, and when it did, was always back on by eleven thirty the following morning. While the power did duly come on at the appointed time, I didn’t quite believe his statement that power outages were rare events. I was mindful of the need to power Neil’s electronic equipment, and I ran my own computer power cord out the bedroom window, plugging it into our faithful Prius’s power converter that worked via the cigarette lighter. Our on-demand propane water heater supplied us with hot water, a perk we lost with a power outage, since it required a spark to ignite.
We bought and hauled in drinking water, as we didn’t feel that the catchment system provided the best water for human consumption—it was perfect for bathing, though, and for kitchen water. The house water arrived via a catchment system, which collected rainwater from the roof and directed it into a rain gutter, and then into a pipe that ran underground to the storage tank. The water pump also depended upon electricity, so when the power went off, we also lost running water. We had propane tanks, which we kept filled, and so long as we had one spark of electricity, we had hot water.
During these first weeks, I felt tired, anxious, and shaky inside. I had, after all, left behind Lisa and Casey, as well as close-knit friends; this was further compounded by escalating financial stress, the unsold Oregon house, the ongoing electrical complications, and the water issues—all of which left me utterly raw.
We did come to find comfort in our local town of Pahoa, where we shopped and collected mail. It was an inconspicuous little town off the beaten track, one that could be easily missed by staying on the highway. Pahoa provided all our necessities, with a tire shop, a hardware store—where I once bought an entire bouquet of cut orchids for just under two dollars—a propane shop, and a large grocery store named Malama Market. A shop with the colorful name Island Crazy carried tropical knickknacks that included Barry’s cards. The main strip of downtown Pahoa also boasted the finest sit-down restaurant in town: Kaleo’s Bar & Grill. The restaurant didn’t look like much on the outside, but inside, the decor was charming, and the food exquisite. The fragrance of an enormous bouquet of Stargazer lilies greeted us every time we visited.
