Chapter 20

Kethian

“Gods, Kethian! We thought you were never going to answer our comms!” Thaves shouts at me.

“I’ve been preoccupied.”

“To say the least! How’s your kidnapping going? I don’t see your captor anywhere. Should I take that to mean you’ve escaped?” my brother asks, his tone both angry and sarcastic.

“What?” But then a smile crosses over my face. “Ah yes, I forgot I was kidnapped.”

“Well, now that you remember, there are many people looking forward to your return,” he tells me. “I don’t like this situation with Tevera, Keth. My people tell me the princess has yet to be found and that you are wanted by the Teverans for attacking two of their guards on Titan Station.”

“But there are no threats of war?” I ask, needing for that fact to be confirmed. Madison is important to me, but so is my world.

“I hope that is not the benchmark! Please brother, come home before it comes to that.”

“I still have work to do, Thaves.”

“What work do you have that is more important than Atana? And please don’t tell me this is about some infatuation you have with that princess. She’s the daughter of the Warrior King, she is untouchable, brother!” Thaves shouts, trying to reason with me. Untouchable, he says. Yet I can still remember her touch quite clearly.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then help me. I can’t have your back unless I know what’s happening.”

“I found the princess in Prett’s dungeon.”

“That much we assumed.”

“And, once upon a time, she did kidnap me.”

“You forget that I have seen the princess of Tevera, brother! There is no way that wisp of a creature got the drop on you.”

“But she did.” I drop down into my seat and kick my feet up, smiling at the memory. “She was ruthless and cunning, brother; you would have loved it. Madison pretended to drown and stole my gun when I tried to rescue her.”

But Thaves doesn’t seem amused. “Why didn’t you just take it from her and return her to her people!”

My smile drops away. “That’s the part I don’t think you’ll understand. Madison wants to go home, Thaves.”

“Then what in the name of the Gods are you doing halfway across the galaxy?”

“Tevera isn’t her home. Earth is.”

“Earth? Earth is a protected planet! No one is allowed to go to Earth!”

“I’m taking her there, whether you back me or not.”

“Kethian, this is insane. Her parents will be furious. If they wanted her on Earth they would have allowed it themselves.”

“What they want doesn’t matter. I’m going to see to it that Madison gets what she wants.”

“She’s a fucking princess, Keth! She already has everything she wants!”

“See, you don’t understand. I knew you wouldn’t”

Thaves takes a deep breath. “Explain it.”

“She’s miserable on Tevera. We all know the queen’s story, right? How she had been taken from her primitive world. She went back for her daughter, but from Madison’s perspective she was abducted by her mother and Vazrium—stolen away from the only life she had ever known. She’s practically a prisoner on
