CHAPTER 12

Genevieve

Following the conclave, Genevieve walked home as quickly as she could without drawing attention to herself. Her whole body screamed at her to run the entire way.

Another settlement has been discovered …

As she walked through the busy streets, she feared the weight of this newfound knowledge would reveal itself through her body language. Which settlement is it? She bent her head, and her left eyebrow arched ever so slightly. Resisting the urge to dip her head farther to hide her face, she picked up her pace. How long ago did they find it? Her hand reached to cup her mouth and she had to stop it midway. What will the Potiors do?

She blinked rapidly as the questions fired through her brain. She had to stop these thoughts – she was losing control.

It began to rain so lightly that it was almost indistinguishable from an early-winter mist. She had never been more grateful to feel fine drizzle dance across her skin. At the touch of a button, her umbrella popped open and she used it to partially shield her face. Five more minutes and then she would be home.

A crashing noise to her right made her jump. She pulled her umbrella down lower, as though it could protect her. Taking a deep breath, she stopped in the middle of the recycled rubber lane, her toes digging into the soles of her boots, trying to steady herself on the rust-coloured ground, before peering out from underneath the canopy of her umbrella. Her heartbeat slowed as she stared at the Sapien in front of her. He was bent over, picking up the goods that had fallen from his cart.

Genevieve didn’t offer to help. Instead, she turned right down the forked lane. Glancing over her shoulder, she tried to establish whether anyone she knew could have seen her flinch at the noise of the cart. It was more than embarrassing; it was another sign of her weakening state. It was not like her to jump at loud noises. She had received years of training to push all her natural responses down and tuck them away with her secrets. She had to keep control.

To try and distract herself for the rest of the journey, she focused her eyes straight ahead and kept her features still, and reviewed the situation. The most obvious piece of information she was missing was when the Potiors had made their discovery. The Premier may have said that the Potiors were still deciding on their course of action, but that didn’t ring true to Genevieve – the Potiors did not dither. It was also unlikely that they had known about the other base for more than a few months – the Potiors also did not delay.

Turning the corner into her lane, Genevieve had to stop abruptly to avoid bumping into two tall figures dressed entirely in black, one a man with grey hair and the other a woman in her forties with her hair scraped away from her face. Genevieve
