CHAPTER 36
The next week, Clark showed up to begin working. He mostly measured and did a little frame work. I got the message right away that he didnât want to be interrupted with small talk, so I made myself disappear when he stopped by.
It was also the week the baby quilts arrived for Cottonâs little girl. Maggie included some handmade stuffed toys from Emily, one of our Beach Quilters, and a knitted sweater her mother had made. Cotton and Susie were delighted and asked for their address to send a thank you note. I extended a Thanksgiving invitation to the two of them, but they were going to Susieâs motherâs house.
I also attended my second meeting of the Friendship Circle. This time it was at Ellenâs house. Her husband was one of the owners of the East Perry Lumber Company in Borna. Her house was as lovely as she was! She definitely had quite a talent for interior decorating and seemed to have the money to do it with. She was also the social butterfly of the community, it seemed, and had the Friendship Circle in the palm of her hand. She was very gracious to me, and I liked her very much. As wives of lumberyard owners, we actually had something in common. However, it was obvious she was able to be herself, unlike the Kate Meyr I knew.
Attending the Friendship circle meeting also meant I could continue to pick Emmaâs brain for information on Dr. Paulson and his wife.
On my way home from the afternoon meeting, I made my weekly stop at Imyâs Antique Shop. She was happy to see me again and informed me during the winter she would just be open on the weekends. Imy had an eye to turn something insignificant into something attractive and useful. I saw three stripped bar stools in a row, as if they were waiting to be varnished or painted. They were for sale as is, so I decided to purchase them for the island I planned for the kitchen. I asked if she would paint them red like the little bench she had sitting on the counter. I also spotted some Victorian Redwork shams that were in perfect condition and very inexpensive. This type of sham would be a good accessory for my two-color quilts. One said, âGOOD MORNINGâ and the other said, âGOOD NIGHT.â I wished they were in German like some I had seen before. She was happy with my purchases and said she would deliver the stools when they were finished. I knew she was also curious to see the house.
Every time I ventured out to run errands, I wanted to explore the surrounding villages I kept hearing so much about. Each little community had its own little history going back to Germany. I could see why merging any of them together would be difficult. Some of the villages were predominantly Lutheran and some Catholic. The locals knew who was who, and even though they were somewhat territorial, they all had respect for one another.
