“Wait,” said Lucas as they finally entered Atrium City. He picked a particularly crowded spot, where many people had gathered to watch the king and queen pass. Garrett, seeming impatient, looked back at Lucas, wondering what could be so important.

Lucas unrolled his castle painting and held it open while JiJi leaped inside. Several onlookers gasped and shouted. Of course, they had heard stories about Lucas’s famous paintings, but to actually see that the stories were true was something else entirely.

When JiJi came out of the painting, he was carrying an infant in each arm. Justim, also carrying babies, trailed him. Holly came out too, hand in hand with her son, Samuel. Many more followed, causing people to gasp at the sight of children – actual children.

“They were being held in Blacknest,” shouted Lucas. “The Black Eagle is no more. Your children have come home.”

Garrett and Rew, like everyone else, seemed shocked and ecstatic all at once. The demands of the kingdom weighed heavily on the king, and Garrett was just beginning to learn that, as he was still a young king. His new life as a busy statesman constantly forced him to think of what was practical, and of the logistics, rather than simply enjoying the event like everyone else. How could they organize this? Will the parents recognize their long-lost children? What if there are disputes? What of the orphaned children, whose parents have died? As Garrett tried to work out the many questions that assaulted his mind, the event played out without any organization – which began to ease his troubled mind when he witnessed the result.

Parents recognized their children, knew them all too well, for the memory of them being torn from their arms, shrieking, had been burned into their minds, into their nightmares, and into their waking eyes. When memory did not suffice, likenesses and birthmarks did.

Unfortunately, there were children who had lost parents during the Black Eagle’s reign. Garrett immediately started to organize a way to place the orphaned children. They would be safely kept long enough for the parents, if they were alive, to come claim them. To his delight, those who were not claimed had an overabundance of would-be parents who were more than happy to take care of them. Sheer joy overwhelmed pragmatic concerns. They were children of the Woodland Realm, and the people of the Woodland Realm embraced them all.

Veannette’s tear-streaked face told Lucas that she felt the same way he did. She was so happy to see people reunited with their children, but knew it was a feeling she would not get to share with the son she thought was gone, the very son who awaited her at home.

“I’m so proud of you,” she said as she leaned her head against Lucas’s shoulder. He put his arm around her, and they watched the many happy reunions play out before them. With each one, they felt a little better. They had made that wonderful event happen and had given the people a gift that could never be repaid – not that Lucas would ever expect a reward.
