Chapter 20

EVAN

It’s a busy weekend and I’ve worked overtime this week, so my patience and give-a-shit meter are at an all-time low. I’ve taken the manager position here, which is for the best because Larry was doing a shit job and everyone knew it. Didn’t help that he drank on the job and was always just waiting for something else to come along.

I knew it was only a matter of time before the position became available, and with the pay increase and better hours during the week, I had to jump on it. Trent’s hockey academy is not cheap and only seems to get more expensive as each year passes. Plus, I figure he may need a car when he goes off to college.

Weekends, though, I make too much in tips to pass up being behind the bar. Even though many of the regulars call me Irritable Evan—thinking I’m unaware of it—I’m a fucking great bartender and they know it.

I’m making a couple of old-fashioneds for Martin and Henry, when I feel something soft brush against my arm. I look over and see a cat. I lean back a bit, then I look again as the cat leans toward me, rubbing against me.

It’s Suzy. I’d bet my life on it.

What the fuck is Suzy doing here?

Oh, shit.

I drag my eyes up and over to the door, but seeing no one, I continue my search. There, leaning against the end of the bar top, is the one woman who still owns me, every part of me. My heart and soul exist for her, and I fully realize that I have been dying a slow, miserable death without her.

“Willa,” I say on a breath.

“Hi, Ev.” Hearing her voice sucks the air from my body.

I haven’t seen her in person since I pulled that stupid stunt with Deanna. The tears on her face, the broken pieces of her heart blazing through her gaze as she locked eyes with me.

I just needed her to stay away because I was too weak to keep sending her away. She wanted to remain friends, keep in touch, message me every so often. Sometimes, it seemed like it was an accident, an old habit she was having a hard time quitting. Sometimes, she’d even apologize for texting, and I wouldn’t hear from her for a while. Other times, I wondered if she was keeping the door open for more when I changed my mind.

But I couldn’t change my mind because I couldn’t be a selfish prick and let her change her plans for me. That’s not who I wanted to be, but I also didn’t want to hurt her.

I pick up Suzy, unsure what to do in this situation. I didn’t think she’d seek me out after avoiding me for the last couple of years.

“Suzy wanted to say hi.”

“Okay… Look, Willa, I can’t have a cat in here,” I say as I pet Suzy and inadvertently give her a snuggle. Dammit. I hold her out, setting her back on the bar.
