Judgements and preferences.

There are 3 elements involved in making judgements:

1. Our judgemental reaction toward X.

2. Our consistent behaviour toward X.

3. That we tend to associate our judgements to everything and anything present with X. That is: our judgements tend to generalise and form associated networks.

Judgements persist across a wide range of situations and tasks. We obviously have more solid judgements about that which we know about – leaving us open to influence at a point of ignorance. What you might also call a thin or blank map – that can be filled! Empty vessels are easy to fill, iron law.

We also use our judgements to ‘predict the future’ (guess!). People with strong opinions, those who take a stand about X tend to make definite guesses about how the future will unfold. More so than people with little conviction. In other words the jellyfish can be lead.

Social class, sex and race are used to form expectations about another’s behaviour, personal worth and abilities. Most tend to overestimate those perceived as having ‘high’ social status and underestimate the performance of those seen as ‘low’. Also we often fail to accurately judge those we like or dislike. We prefer our ‘in group’ and often overestimate them in comparison to others.

Emotions and motivation are thoroughly affected by our judgements across a wide range of categories of stimulus, environment and experience. As I have said earlier – in making suggestions of any kind you must be aware that for most people their judgements, right or wrong, are intimately linked to their sense of self-worth; especially when directly attacked or called into question. In fact our sense of ‘psychic stability’ is linked to our consistent and persistent maintenance of a given set of judgements.
