The Long Arm of Empire:

Canned Goods in Chinatown

Hawaii, like other tropical lands, was sucked into world commerce in the nineteenth century, sending off sugar and canned pineapple to the mainland United States and Europe, receiving in return canned foods. They are still coming, not just SPAM and crackers, but all kinds of processed foods. A stroll around the groceries of Chinatown drives home how much the Tropics use these products from the temperate lands. Just consider: Longevity Brand Full Cream Sweetened Condensed Milk. The label, its legend in Chinese and Vietnamese, shows an elderly Chinese mandarin with flowing robes and a droopy moustache who appears to be carrying gau. Sun Hing Foods of California distributes this under license from the Cooperative Condensfabriek of Holland. Ribena Concentrated Blackcurrant Juice Drink (By Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen), dark purple, almost black in a tall, handsome bottle with a gold cap, and Lucozade Glucose Drink, in a tall, clear bottle covered with crinkly yellow cellophane. How well I remember them both. My parents heartily disapproved of Lucozade, which they regarded, with some justice, as expensive sugar water, but they just as heartily endorsed blackcurrant juice with its high vitamin C content. Both drinks are made by Beechams, best known in Britain as the maker of Beechams'

Pills, an all-purpose remedy for every conceivable ill.

Knorr Instant Chicken Flavor Bouillon in the familiar green and yellow packaging, but in huge cans labeled in Chinese characters, the flavor adjusted to Asian taste. This is produced by Knorr Products of Thayngen, Switzerland. Horlicks Malted Food Drink Mix (interesting name when you think about it). Korean roasted barley tea and other cereal-thickened hot drinks had seemed strange to me until I realized that the major ingredients of Horlicks are wheat flour and malted barley with milk products and sugar added.

Ovaltine, a real polyglot. Ovaltine is essentially Horlicks with a little cocoa
