Chapter 28

Albert whistled softly. “Daaaaayumm. You weren’t kidding, you’re in it to win it. OK, what is your operational budget?”

“Just tell me what it’ll cost and I’ll make it happen,” Dylan replied.

Albert thought for a minute and said, “OK, it all starts with the parachute. If we don’t have that, we’re a no-go in any case.”

“We?” said Dylan. “Does that mean you’ll help me?”

Albert met his gaze. “Dylan, in case you haven’t noticed, I don’t have a hell of a lot to show for over four decades of life. I’m not what you would call ‘fully engaged’ in anything. Monique and Jared were the most important things in the world to me, and after them, flying. They’re gone, it’s just me now. And flying is about to become incredibly difficult and expensive, if things go the way I think they are going to go. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep it up. Planes are expensive, both to feed and to maintain. Who knows what new regulations and restrictions will be put into place when America splits. And, I guess I just NEED to do something worthwhile. Not just haul rich assholes back and forth to Wyoming to shoot elk, or to take skydivers up on Saturdays so they can record a Go-Pro video of themselves in free-fall and post it on social media to show what badasses they are. What you are planning to do is one of the bravest things I’ve ever heard of. Even if you failed, it would be a hell of an honorable way to go. And what a story! When the movie gets made, let’s see if we can get Denzel Washington to play the role of me!” He extended his hand over the coffee table, and Dylan took it. They shook on it, firmly. “Hell, yes, I’m in. Let’s go get the love of your life out of that shithole, and into free territory.”

Albert then said, “I’ve got a friend in mind. I think he can help us. I’ll call him up and see.” Albert took out his cell phone, looked through his contact list, and then dialed a number. When a man answered, Albert said “Hi, Gunny. Albert Townsend. How you doing?”

The usual polite banter followed, then Albert said “Are you going to be in your shop this afternoon? Great. I’ll be there in about an hour. I need to see if you can get or rig something special for me. Thanks! See you then.”

Albert turned to Dylan and said, “Great. That’s one of the skydiving instructors at Music City Skydiving, the company I sometimes do lifts for when they have more demand than their single aircraft can support. He’s a retired Marine Recon Gunnery Sergeant, and a licensed parachute rigger. He can either get or make the rig you need by modifying some other parachute. Given your short timeline, I’m assuming a used parachute will suit you? I doubt we can get a brand new rig delivered from the manufacturer in time.
