Chapter Eighteen
Rio
âWhy is this thing so complicated?â I asked no one in particular since Jesse didnât give a crap and Chloe was in the kitchen looking for something to snack on.
âOkay I think I have everything, well except a couple of bottles.â Caden stepped out of Jesseâs room carrying a backpack stuffed with what looked like enough supplies for a week, and carrying a blanket, a couple of stuffed animals, and what looked like a portable playset.
âDo we need all that?â I asked.
âWell, we might. I mean probably not, but if we do need anything, weâll have it.â He set down the backpack and walked into the kitchen where he took out a cool pack from the freezer along with four bottles of milk and put it all in a small soft-side cooler. âDo you think four is enough?â
âWeâre only going to be gone a couple of hours.â Chloe repeated what I was thinking but was too afraid to say. I knew that look of determination on Cadenâs face and nothing we said was going to change his mind.
âI only need to check that I packed enough diapers and wipes and weâre ready to go. Oh! I want to grab another change of clothes in case he has a blowout.â
âOh my god,â Chloe whispered as Caden rushed back to Jesseâs room. He returned a moment later with more things to shove into the backpack heâd originally brought out.
âI might need to bring another bag. This is a lot of stuff.â
âBaby, let me carry some, I have my hands free now that Iâve gotten him snapped into the carrier.â
Caden looked at me with some trepidation, before he handed me the cooler of milk and the extra blanket.
âIâll put the rest in his car seat, we canât forget that.â He threw the rest of the clothes and diapers he was holding in, picked it up, and walked out the door. Chloe and I looked at each other then rushed to catch up with him. When we got to the car, he had the car seat clicked in and was sliding into the passenger seat.
âRio, take him out of there and put him in the car seat. Letâs get going.â
Chloe laughed and slid into the backseat while I tried to remember how Iâd gotten Jesse in this thing to begin with. After trying several times, I was finally able to get him out of it, and safely clicked into the car seat. He didnât seem to mind at all, and I kissed his forehead as I tucked a soft blanket around him.
I followed Chloeâs directions and after driving around a little longer to find a parking place, we were finally ready to go. I jumped out of the car and realized I still had the carrier attached to me, which saved me some time getting Jesse sorted out.
âDo you think heâs warm enough?â Caden asked and felt his hands.
âLetâs put his hat on. But I think heâll be fineâIâll keep him warm.â
âYes, you will,â Caden mumbled and slipped on the backpack.
