HARRY MEEKING, LEFT WING (TORONTO HOCKEY CLUB)

Meeking won Stanley Cups with the first NHL team (Toronto) and the last team to win the trophy from outside the NHL (WCHL Victoria Cougars, 1924–25). He scored three goals in Toronto’s 7–3 playoff victory over the Montreal Canadiens on March 11, 1918, becoming the first NHL player to net a hat trick in a post-season game.

“He checks like a fiend and his work around the net is good,” the Toronto World noted. “Meeking has speed and stickhandling ability but he evinced a desire to mix it up with his opponents,” added the Ottawa Journal.

Moving west to play for the Victoria Aristocrats of the PCHA in 1919, Meeking excelled as a rover in the seven-man game still employed out west. He led the PCHA with 57 penalty minutes in 1920–21 and scored 13 goals in 1921–22.

He would return to the NHL in 1926–27 as an original member of the expansion Detroit Cougars, today’s Red Wings. He was traded to the Boston Bruins during that season and finished his NHL days there, playing his farewell NHL games in the Stanley Cup final that spring as the Bruins were vanquished by the Ottawa Senators.
