Harry was asked if he was aware of our concerns about P.K.’s self-esteem being harmed by the way P.K. was being coached, and that he was being treated differently than the other players.

HARRY

They never said that to me. That’s the first I’ve heard of it. At the time, there were only two centres and P.K. was one. You’re trying to get everyone in the game, and in the particular game when P.K. left, we started off real slow and ended up taking three penalties in a row, so we were playing five-on-three. For the first six to seven minutes of the game we were playing five-on-three and we had a deep team. We were coaching in a minefield, trying to keep everybody happy. You’re trying to get everybody in. We were trying to get at least four or five guys into the game early and we killed the penalty off but were still trying to get all the wingers into the game in the five-on-three situation over six or seven minutes of the game. [No one sat for ten minutes.] I guess that was the turning point, and they didn’t like it that P.K. never went on the ice every second shift. Because he was one of two centres, in normal, regular shifts he’s on the ice every second shift.

In regards to treating him any differently, I tried to treat him like everybody else. If he felt that, I hope it never hurt his desire to play or his willingness to play, or the family’s willingness to be in the game, but I don’t feel that I tried to treat him any differently. I tried to include him.

There was no prior mention of, “You know, Harry, can we have a talk?” There was none of that. And if there had been, that would be the thing that I would have liked to have done. If I could have handled it differently, it would be to say, “Let’s sit down and see if we can talk this out.” But sometimes you look back at it and you didn’t get that opportunity. And the easier way to deal with it was to let it happen the way it did. That’s the only regret I have, that I would have loved to finish out that year with him and then if he parted company, oh well, that’s the nature of GTHL hockey. That’s why there are twelve teams and you can move around.

I always stayed in touch with P.K. There were never any issues. In Malcolm’s midget year, Malcolm played with the Reps (I was coaching a Reps team at a different level), and I used to always see P.K. and Karl and Maria around. We always said hello. I’ve always enjoyed the family. Karl was always running around with the other boys but Maria was so dedicated to P.K. She was the one who basically followed P.K. to every rink, every game. Maria is a very, very nice person. Very down to earth.
