âIâve written details on the back of each picture pointing you exactly to what weâve foundâ said Robson. He wiped his forehead with the small cotton towel that his mother had given him that morning. Robson knew he sweated almost uncontrollably on summer days like this, and it showed up the results of all the carbohydrate laded food he consumed because he couldnât bring himself to do anything constructive about losing weight. Senior Sergeant Joel Stringer had known Robson for years and had told Farrell that the poor bastard had no life outside of work. âAnd what right-minded woman would look at him in that state?â Stringer had pondered to the boss during his conversation with Farrell over some beers in Nedâs Place. âHe probably hasnât seen his own prick since he was in high schoolâ. Since the death of his father, Robson only had his mother and her cooking and the way she showed her love for her son was by giving him platefuls at every meal. Farrell couldnât help but feel sorry for Robson and the lonely path he was taking to an early grave. But he also thought that the man himself had to take some responsibility and get a hold of the situation.
âThanks, Deanâ said Farrell as he looked over the photographs and then looked up and noticed how much Robson was still perspiring even after having been sat down for a good few minutes now. âAre you alright by the way? Can I get you a glass of water?â
âNo, thank you for the offer, sir, but Iâll be okay. Iâm one of those rare Australians who doesnât celebrate the summer. I hate cricket. I canât stand tennis. My cousin over in the UK is living through minus temperatures at the moment during an especially harsh winter over there. But that would suit me down to the groundâ.
âWell Iâm the opposite, I must sayâ said Farrell who wanted to tell Robson about the health advantages of a low-carb diet when you need to lose weight. But he probably wouldnât listen. The sight of him sweating like that though did put Farrell in mind of the reason why all the responsible dog owners in the country who really do love their animals, donât let them get overweight because they end up suffering when it came to the summer. âI love the hot weather weâre experiencing at the moment. Itâs a shame we have to keep on working. Look, anything yet on what you mightâve found from the body of Commander Barnes?â
âHis throat was cut and then some. Whoever did it mustâve taken great care to cover their tracks. They mustâve worn protective clothing because there are no traces of any other DNA that weâve found so far. They knew what they were doingâ.
âAnd they made it look like the crime of forty-four years agoâ.
âUnless they were the same person? Itâs not beyond the realms of possibility that the killer of Ivor Rogers back in nineteen seventy-seven also took out Barnes yesterday.
