Throughout his teenage years, the boy fantasized about bondage and rape. During boring high school classes, he daydreamed over the encounter with the girl on the backyard hill, the power he held over her, the terror in his victim’s eyes before her friends intervened. Sometimes he painted elaborate scenes in which he overwhelmed the girl and tore her clothes off. For years, he longed to return to his cousin’s house. But the boy was the black sheep of the family now, unwanted and unwelcome.

After graduation, he declined an offer from his hometown college and enrolled at Syracuse University. His mother lacked the funds to pay for a private college, but the boy earned a full scholarship. He despised his college roommates. They partied all night and never let him sleep. Worse, they were always around, disturbing his fantasies.

Before his sophomore year, he applied for a valet job at a hotel in downtown Syracuse. His college adviser warned the boy not to stretch himself thin, but he needed money. The valet job paid for a seedy one-room apartment on Erie Boulevard, a short walk from the prostitutes, who lined up across the street in front of the adult video store. For weeks, he worked up the courage to pay for sex. The women always hooted and gawked when he approached, his heart pounding like a snare drum. He kept his sweaty hands jammed inside his pockets, head lowered in embarrassment. Each time, he peeled off at the last second and returned to his apartment, swearing to himself that he’d hire the sexiest hooker on the block next time.

On a cold November evening, a week before school released for Thanksgiving break, the first snowflakes of the season coated the sidewalk. He stepped off the bus after returning from work, when his eyes locked on a stunning woman with curly black hair to her shoulders. She smiled at him from across the street, as she clicked on her heels from the mailbox to the video store entryway, her body shivering as she puffed condensation clouds past ruby-red lips. For a second, he almost believed she was the girl from Ian’s street. But that wasn’t possible. His beautiful obsession was the proverbial girl next door, wholesome and ready for the taking. This woman was a fake, a cheap imitation.

But with a little imagination . . . and the boy’s imagination knew no bounds . . . the prostitute could be a surrogate for the neighborhood girl. In the dark, with her clothes scattered across his bed, he wouldn’t be able to tell the prostitute apart from his obsession.

The clock read ten, and the night grew colder as he crossed the street. This time, he’d follow through. The boy’s pulse pounded in his neck as he rounded the corner. The woman conferred with another prostitute, a haggard woman with humongous breasts and a face prematurely aged by makeup. After the ugly hooker wandered inside the video store, he swallowed and searched over his shoulder, ensuring nobody watched.
