Barnevelder

The Barnevelder is the most famous of the many breeds in Holland. It was developed in the district of Barneveld, Holland, where the Dutch Poultry Museum is located. Although Phoenician traders brought poultry to the area as early as the twelfth century, it was not until the mid-1800s that a conscious effort was made to improve egg production. Locals began mixing Barnevelders with exciting new Asiatic breeds, including Brahmas, Cochins, Langshans, and Malays. As a result, they developed a prolific layer of brown eggs, the choice color at that time. The Barnevelder made its exhibition debut in 1911 at The Hague’s agriculture exposition and, in 1921, gained tremendous recognition at the first World Poultry Congress in The Hague. The American Standard recognizes only the Double Laced Partridge variety, although in Holland they also exhibit Blue Laced, White, and Black.
