Tenth grade gave Roy a girlfriend, a first chair seat in the trumpet section of the stage band, persistent nightmares of leering Dalmatians and obscene experiments on Ridge Road, and physical education with Denny Grove. Matt, who had only been told that Denny’s trailer was a mess and that Denny had tried to hold Roy’s hand, said it should be easy for Roy to shrug off Denny. After all, Denny had that damned girl’s voice, those eyes, and was queer enough to flunk P.E. every six weeks for not dressing out.

But Denny gave Roy looks of desperation whenever he caught Roy’s eyes, before Roy could flee in the other direction or into the safety of a group of friends. Denny would also cram notes into Roy’s locker. Pleading notes. Notes Roy would tear up and fling into the trash can with fear and disgust.
