James Thomas

Angela’s eyelids fluttered and her body trembled as it broke through the holds of the sedation—helped by a dose of reversal. Slowly, her eyes opened.

“You’re safe,” James said, wondering if her brain would recognize his voice through the haze.

It took a moment, and her mind seemed to clear. Her pupils dilated and she fought against the restraints.

“Liam!” she growled through gritted teeth.

“Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t have a lot of options. I gave you some meds to reduce any nausea.”

“And you want a thank you for that?” Her voice was cold, her words clipped.

James didn’t blame her—he would’ve had the same reaction, or worse. Likely much worse.

“I‘m sorry, Ange, but I need your help. I wouldn’t have done this otherwise,” James said.

“Help? You’re a wanted man. You shouldn’t even be here. You can’t move around the streets of Russia and expect to leave alive,” she said, her voice sounding more alert, and less pissed off, and that gave James hope. Hope that she might help him.

“I’m not walking around the streets. I have someone else to do that. And I plan on leaving as soon as I have the information I need. Information you have access to,” James said, leaning forward.

“Undo my arms,” Angela said.

James shook his head. “Talk first.”

Her teeth sawed together.

“Let’s not do this the hard way,” he said, keeping his frustration out of his voice. She was wasting time, and he wanted to leave before the sun rose. The more distance they could get between themselves and Moscow, the safer they would be.

“You’re a cold son of a bitch,” she said.

James ignored the jab.

She resisted for another few seconds, and then she sighed angrily. “What do you want to know?”

“I want to know who the CIA has assigned to look for me. And I want to know what leads they have, and where they’re looking. All information your access will give you.”

“It’s not who, singular—it’s who, plural. They’ve assigned a task force, Liam. A thirty-person unit dedicated to one mission and one mission only: Capture Liam Smith. Dead or alive.”

A team. It was worse than he thought. James narrowed his eyes slightly.

“I need you to log in. I need you to see where they’re looking.”

She hesitated, and his heart skipped a beat. What was she hiding?

“Ange,” James warned.

“I don’t need to log in,” she said, meeting his eyes.

It took a moment to register.

“You’re one of the thirty, aren’t you?” James said, letting the disgust drip through his words. He’d never had friends, but he thought he’d had a few allies. He’d thought she was one of them.

“I’m a non-participating member, yes,” she said. “Don’t look at me like that. You know damn well I couldn’t refuse that mission or they’d start looking into me, too. Our relationship—of sorts—complicated things. You made a fucking mess, Liam. You can’t assassinate eighty percent of the Russian mafia and the head of the CIA and not expect repercussions.”

In his peripheral vision he saw Kyoji’s eyes widen. The man knew far too much already.
