CHAPTER TEN
THE THIRD SECRET
During the summer of 1941 Sister Lúcia mentioned for the first time, in the third volume of her memoirs, that the secret which the Mother of God had given to her on July 13, 1917, was in three parts and that she “would now reveal the first two parts.” At that time she wrote down the first two prophecies, which related to the end of World War I, the rise of Russia, and the breaking out of World War II. She believed, however, that the time for publishing the Third Secret had not yet come, and wrote down only the first words of it, “In Portugal the doctrine of faith will always be preserved.”
In the summer of 1943 Sister Lúcia caught bronchitis, which developed into a dangerous pleurisy. Luckily, she soon recovered. When Bishop da Silva and Canon Galamba visited her at her cloister afterward, they had a long talk with her. They were worried that she might fall seriously ill again and die, carrying her secret with her into the grave.
“Why don’t you reveal the third part of the secret?” asked the canon. “Can’t you tell us now?”
Lúcia replied, turning to the bishop, “If Your Grace wishes it, I can tell you.”
“I don’t want to have anything to do with it,” answered the bishop hastily. “I don’t wish to intervene in the matter in any way.”
“What a pity!” said the canon with a sigh. “At least she should write it down and leave it with you in a sealed envelope.” But nothing was done at that time.
Then, in September 1943, Sister Lúcia was once again ill, this time due to a severe infection following a vaccination. She had to be taken to the hospital and was operated on there. When she returned to the cloister three weeks later, everyone begged her to finally put the prophecy down in writing. She waited for divine instructions, and it wasn’t until January 1944 that she told the bishop of Leiria, “I have written down what you wanted me to. God wanted to test me for a while, but finally this was indeed His will. It is in a sealed envelope in my diary.”
She revealed later that she had been encouraged to write down the secret by a vision of Mary she saw on January 2. Until then, despite repeated attempts to recall the exact words of the prophecy, she had been unable to do so. But after the appearance of the Madonna the words flowed out of her pen. She immediately wrote it down in twenty-five lines, which was as long as the first two secrets put together, but still fitted easily onto a single page of paper.
Lúcia did not trust this valuable document to the mail, but waited for a suitable opportunity to give it to Bishop da Silva. Finally, on July 17, 1944, she handed over her fourth diary. She had inserted the envelope containing the Third Secret between two of its pages. In an accompanying letter
