CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Once the trees swallowed them from sight, the five slowed to a trot to let their horses catch their air. Colin groaned, doubling over his saddle. Laughing, Will reached across to thump Colin on the back.

“Oh, come on, we got out!” Will chuckled. “And did you see Ganfri’s face?”

“I thought for a solid second there that you all had froze up,” Rowan said, riding up on Colin’s other side. “And that we were going to be caught after all of that, all our work. That would have sucked.”

“Thank Alamore for Sir Richard. Without him, we would still be there.” Eldin trotted to Will’s other side, pulling her hood off. Her face was pink with the excitement of the ride, but a shadow fell over her grey eyes. “What will your father have done to him for helping us, Rowan?” Will’s chest tightened, his smile faltering. He hadn’t considered that anything might happen to Richard.

It was Wren who answered, riding up on Eldin’s other side. “Nothing. Father will be furious; he’ll blame it on Rowan and think that he corrupted me. But he won’t touch an Alamore knight. He’s smarter than that.”

“But he doesn’t seem to like Alamore much,” Colin panted, sitting upright in his saddle. “How can we know he won’t do anything to Richard?”

“Don’t get him wrong,” Rowan said, grimacing. “Father loves Alamore, he really does. It’s Revlan he can’t stand. He’d never raise a finger against Richard – for one, he knows Revlan would murder him and take the lands, for another, Richard is a knight of Alamore, not of Revlan. He was knighted in the early days of King Paradon.”

“Good,” Will muttered, turning to take in their small group.

Eldin had relaxed somewhat, relieved with Rowan’s answer. Wren was bouncing in her stirrups, a broad smile over her face as they rode away from her home. Will felt a tug in his chest. He’d been like her once, excited for the chance to become a knight of Alamore. While he was still excited – he’d never wanted to become a knight more than now – so much had changed. The glory of knighthood was marred, too, with the death of friends.

The trail they followed curved ahead and, rounding the corner, Will’s heart sank. Before them, the path shattered in a spiderweb of branches, all forking different directions. This was it then, this was where they would have to leave Eldin and Wren and continue their own way to Cale. The idea of lying to Eldin made his heart shrivel in his chest. With everything they’d been through, he was disgusted with himself. It felt like a betrayal.

“We should probably split up in order to keep our trail harder to follow.” Colin’s voice broke through Will’s thoughts. His friend was chewing on his lip, brow furrowed, and Will saw his own apprehension in Colin’s green eyes. Will waited, hoping neither Eldin nor Wren would notice Rowan avoiding their eyes or Colin’s grave demeanor.

“Alright.” Eldin nodded, her eyes fixed on the trails ahead.
