MY BODY FELT NUMB AS I stared, horrified, at the girl Iâd come to rescue.
But it wasnât her at all. Lilith had taken over. I recognized her voice. Iâd heard it in my head as well.
Which meant Lilith had control over more of us than weâd feared.
âBrielle,â I whispered, pressing my face against the bars. âItâs me. Itâs Leo. Your parents are here.â
Brielle simply stared at me, her mouth stretched wide in a malicious grin. Her black eyes seemed to drink in everything all at once.
âWhereâwhere is Nix?â I asked loudly. âWhere is your firebird?â
Brielle threw back her head and laughed. âThe firebird is mine. It cannot save her now. Nothing can.â
The phoenix saved her once, I thought, my head spinning. It can save her again. But how do I summon it?
My body suddenly went still as I remembered what happened whenever we touched. The lustful moment weâd shared in my home earlierâwhen sheâd completely burst into flames.
âBrielle,â I tried again, trying to ignore the scuffling and shouts echoing behind me. âCome. Let me free you.â I felt around for the door and found it bolted shut. Cursing, I lifted my hand, trying to summon my magic.
Brielle cackled. âYou are mine too, dear. You canât free her without my magic.â
My hands shook as I strained to bring my magic forward, but nothing happened. Then, in desperation, I thought of the red magic still festering within me, hoping I still had access to it. Something faint crackled beneath my palm, but still, nothing happened.
I slammed my hand against the bars and grunted in frustration. Brielle laughed again.
Think, Leo, I said to myself. If she were your enemy, how would you bring her closer?
I took a breath and cocked my head at her. âItâs a bit pitiful, dear Lilith, for you to possess the body of a mere child. Isnât it?â
Brielleâs smile faded, and her eyes narrowed. âYou know best she isnât just a child, now, is she?â A slow smile spread across her face, and she raised her eyebrows.
She knows. She knows how I feel about her.
I swallowed and forced an easy smirk on my face. âPerhaps not. But Benito? Myself? The silversmith? It all seems a bit desperate.â I leaned back and crossed my arms. âSurely you, the Dark Lady, Luciferâs Whore, can do better than that?â
Brielleâs mouth twisted in fury, her bottom teeth showing as she snarled. Slowly, she crawled toward me.
Closer, I urged. Closer.
âYou know nothing,â she spat, her face so contorted with rage that I didnât recognize her anymore. âYou foul, useless demon scum. You think you know power?â She laughed without humor. âI can show you true power. But I must access it first. And if you knew even a taste of the power in store for me, oh, you would sink to the lowest of depths to reach it, just like me.â
I raised an eyebrow. âI donât believe you.â
Brielleâs nostrils flared.
I shrugged. âI think you have no power in the Underworld, my lady. In fact,
