MY BODY FELT NUMB AS I stared, horrified, at the girl I’d come to rescue.

But it wasn’t her at all. Lilith had taken over. I recognized her voice. I’d heard it in my head as well.

Which meant Lilith had control over more of us than we’d feared.

“Brielle,” I whispered, pressing my face against the bars. “It’s me. It’s Leo. Your parents are here.”

Brielle simply stared at me, her mouth stretched wide in a malicious grin. Her black eyes seemed to drink in everything all at once.

“Where—where is Nix?” I asked loudly. “Where is your firebird?”

Brielle threw back her head and laughed. “The firebird is mine. It cannot save her now. Nothing can.”

The phoenix saved her once, I thought, my head spinning. It can save her again. But how do I summon it?

My body suddenly went still as I remembered what happened whenever we touched. The lustful moment we’d shared in my home earlier—when she’d completely burst into flames.

“Brielle,” I tried again, trying to ignore the scuffling and shouts echoing behind me. “Come. Let me free you.” I felt around for the door and found it bolted shut. Cursing, I lifted my hand, trying to summon my magic.

Brielle cackled. “You are mine too, dear. You can’t free her without my magic.”

My hands shook as I strained to bring my magic forward, but nothing happened. Then, in desperation, I thought of the red magic still festering within me, hoping I still had access to it. Something faint crackled beneath my palm, but still, nothing happened.

I slammed my hand against the bars and grunted in frustration. Brielle laughed again.

Think, Leo, I said to myself. If she were your enemy, how would you bring her closer?

I took a breath and cocked my head at her. “It’s a bit pitiful, dear Lilith, for you to possess the body of a mere child. Isn’t it?”

Brielle’s smile faded, and her eyes narrowed. “You know best she isn’t just a child, now, is she?” A slow smile spread across her face, and she raised her eyebrows.

She knows. She knows how I feel about her.

I swallowed and forced an easy smirk on my face. “Perhaps not. But Benito? Myself? The silversmith? It all seems a bit desperate.” I leaned back and crossed my arms. “Surely you, the Dark Lady, Lucifer’s Whore, can do better than that?”

Brielle’s mouth twisted in fury, her bottom teeth showing as she snarled. Slowly, she crawled toward me.

Closer, I urged. Closer.

“You know nothing,” she spat, her face so contorted with rage that I didn’t recognize her anymore. “You foul, useless demon scum. You think you know power?” She laughed without humor. “I can show you true power. But I must access it first. And if you knew even a taste of the power in store for me, oh, you would sink to the lowest of depths to reach it, just like me.”

I raised an eyebrow. “I don’t believe you.”

Brielle’s nostrils flared.

I shrugged. “I think you have no power in the Underworld, my lady. In fact,
