I was playing a long game, and there was no point in suffering needlessly. We walked back over to the bedroom after a decadent soak. Servants dried my body, and I was now wrapped in the softest towels ever to grace my skin. Two women met me as I entered the bed chamber, greeting me with a simple yet elaborate dress.
"Is...is that for me?" I asked hesitantly.
The fabric felt like satin against my fingertips. Soft and inviting, the turquoise colors vibrantly shone as the light bounced off the material.
"Does it please our Lady?" asked Dalinda.
"It's far more lavish than anything I've worn on Earth."
The women smiled warmly, enjoying seeing their world through my new eyes. The elegance of the dress felt foreign. I was used to rougher materials, not velvet smoothness. I started to see what Streya liked about Tanir, but it wasn't enough to excuse how I got here. Half-dressed, I was startled as a loud thud pounded the chamber door.
Dalinda asked, "Who disturbs our Lady?"
A deep voice traveled through the thickness of the oak doors, "Your King."
While the maidens rushed to complete my dressing, Alvar's patience was non-existent. The bedroom doors flew open. "A King is never left waiting, Dalinda."
"More like a child than a King." I was lucky my undergarments were entirely in place, even if my dress wasnât fully secure. Alvar heard my remark, but I watched his expression as he chose to let it go.
The King of Aurora pushed his way into my chamber, then toured the room. His piercing yellow eyes glanced in my direction, "Do you like your quarters?"
I struggled to finish dressing. "Lovely, though privacy might prove the luxury," I jabbed. "Is it customary for a King to invade a woman's bed-chamber uninvited?"
He remained silent. I watched him as he kept his eyes averted. His cloak now off, I saw his figure more clearly. His chiseled abs peeked through an open tunic, and his bare chest boasted power. It was unfortunate his personality wasn't as beautiful.
High King Alvar turned his gaze and caught me as I quickly examined him.
Shit.
A smirk curled his luscious lips. "You betray yourself, Lady Liv." Taking a step closer, he fixed his sights. Cocky confidence twinkled in his eyes. "Do you like what you see?"
I scoffed, disgusted by his suggestion. "Don't flatter yourself. It's normal to examine one's jailer. It's a matter of survival, not a compliment."
"You didn't answer the question." The King was now face to face with me. The tension between us mounted and my breasts swelling was a biological response. I'd be lying if I said we didn't share primal sexual chemistry, but it was hormonal and nothing more. I was not an animal driven by instinct alone. I knew there were beautiful men with ugly souls. The most beautiful predators were often filled with the most venom. This was a battle of wills, and King Alvar's weak point was his inflated sense of self. I toyed with him, hovering my lips close to his, baring a teasing smirk.
