Zander

I feel like Maelyn has just gifted me with the suns. Sure, she reduced me to begging for her cooperation like a peddler trying to sell sunshine in the Day Realm, but my pride is the last thing on my mind.

She’s willing to stay.

In return, I’ll give her everything I can, including my secrets. No, not all of them. But I’ll tell her enough to pull her further into my life.

“It needed to be done,” I say, thinking back on our conversation in the stairwell.

“What did?” Maelyn happily munches on her sandwich, unaware of the tragic story I’m about to dole out.

“Zarid killed his father to save his sister’s life. If Zella had died that day, the repercussions to this world would’ve been massive. The rift between Day and Night would’ve been bigger than ever. War would’ve broken out. Trade would’ve stopped which means, at the very least, we’d have no cold beverages.” Raising my glass of water, I let the ice from the Dream Realm clink around. “Everything would be different. Zarid made the right choice when he ran his father through with an iron spike.”

Drawing a deep breath through the nose, Maelyn chews her fried potatoes. “Well, it does sound justified.”

“Truly?” I’m surprised and skeptical.

It’s obvious my wife is soft, which isn’t a bad trait. She’s sweet. Untainted by how evil people can be. I like her innocence.

But she’s accepting the brutal crime way more easily than I expected.

“I’m not a fan of the death penalty,” she states, “but in domestic abuse situations, there are times when getting away isn’t an option. In the worst-case scenario, someone gets killed, and I’d rather it be the abuser than the victim. If your father killed his father to stop him from hurting Zella, then it was a form of defense.”

Defense. The excuse rolls around in my mind.

Is that what it was when I hunted my father down? When I flew above him on Battle Field in griffin form, reveling in the fear on his face when he spotted me in the sky? When I bit down on his neck with my beak, tasting his blood and feeling the crunch of bone as I severed his spine?

“I murdered him,” I blurt the confession. “Zarid, I mean. Five years ago, he struck an under-the-table deal with the princess of the Night Realm. Traded a bunch of Glow for a good number of their females. Kirian was furious and banished his sister for the crime, and I knew it was up to me to rescue the women because my father was willing to fight to keep them. The resulting battle with the Night Realm served as the perfect opportunity for me to carry out my father’s execution. He never saw me coming until it was too late… and I ripped his head off.”

Maelyn gasps. “W-with your hands?”

I let out a sound that’s neither a confirmation nor a denial, but she takes it as a yes.

Her soft fingers cover my fist. “That must’ve been awful for you.
