Here we are, tea and your paper,â I said to Sarah as I sat down beside her at a table in the station buffet. âTrain should be here inâ¦â I looked at my watch. âAbout now.â
âManchester Piccadilly, five thirty-five service, leaving from Platform One in seven minutes,â came the announcement on cue.
âAlmost on time, now, come on, Iâll carry that tea for you.â We walked out onto the platform, where yellow sodium lights shone weakly in the chilled darkness and the breaking dawn was still only a promise, to the now-waiting train, which hissed to us that its diesel engines were ready to roll. âNow, whereâs the first class?â
âI would say you were pampering me,â yawned Sarah as we found the appropriate carriage and opened the door, âbut itâs too early.â She yawned again. âAnd you seem to have such boundless energy,â she said, stepping aboard; I followed her to a compartment, balancing the teacup and newspaper as I went.
âTake that and that, and let me get this.â I placed the cup and paper in her hands then lifted her bag onto the overhead luggage rack. âNow then, all set?â
âYes, darling, Iâll miss you.â
âMe too,â I said, leaning to kiss her.
âOh, and Iâll call your office about Professor Horniman.â
âOkay, just leave a message with Miss Stephens.â
âI will, andââ
âFive thirty-five Manchester Piccadilly service leaving from Platform One in one minute,â interrupted the station announcer. âStopping at Newton Le Willows, Warrington Bank Quayâ¦â He carried on, listing out each station on the line in an almost unintelligible drone that made further conversation impractical.
âGot to go,â I shouted, shutting the compartment door behind me, then stepping back out onto the platform, only to hear Sarahâs voice once again.
âJack,â she called from the carriage window. âJust remember, the professor didnât get that waistline by accident. Loves his food and loves his wine and really opens up after a few drinks.â
âIn vino veritas,â I called back.
âSo take him somewhere nice, and donât skimp on the booze,â she shouted. âThat should swing it.â
âOkay, tell him to come to the Occidental for one oâclock,â I yelled, watching her wave as the train began to move. âGot that?â
She nodded, and I waved back as the train gathered speed and the carriage disappeared from sight.
