Chapter 14
SERAL BARED his fangs in a vicious snarl. He and Polsh had already been on their way to find their tzius when the alarm from the bio-net went off through their vehicle communicator. Theyâd intercepted two guards on the way back to the residence reporting that Witani and Ryker had gotten a message they were hurt and taken off for the border.
Thank the gods they had been able to track Witaniâs vehicle. As soon as the bio-net alerted them to the humans landing nearby, Seral ordered the guards to abandon the vehicles in their convoy on the curving road and take to the jungle. Racing along like their ancestorsâthrough the treesâtheyâd been heading straight for the coordinates when Polsh had stopped.
âTheyâre over there.â He pointed away from the site.
âAre you sure?â Seral looked at him.
Polsh snarled. âI can smell my tziuâs blood.â Theyâd splashed through an elbow of a stream running into the river just before Polsh stopped. Could Witani have fallen into the water?
âThey may not be close, even if you can smell her. Donât lose focus.â
Seral gestured for his second-in-command. Fieo approached quietly. âKeep going. If you find my tziu or my sister, message us. Send the guards in to kill the humans, but tell them to try to keep one alive. Your job is to look for my family.â
Fieo bowed his head. âIâll do my best. I will not fail you.â
Seral could feel his adrenaline racing, his body prepared for battle. His hands ached with his need to sink them into someone. He barely held on to his control. He spoke curtly. âSee that you donât.â
âLetâs go.â No need for anything else between them, Seral followed Polsh. His friend was a fighter and tracker who outshone every other male on Caeorleia. If anyone could find them, he could.
They raced through the jungle, slipping over and under trees and bushes in the way. Seral swept his gaze back and forth as they searched. He picked up every bit of light that filtered down until the ground almost shone silver in his vision.
He saw no footprints or blood. Theyâd been traveling for a short time when Polsh abruptly stopped. Seral followed so closely, he barely managed to stop before they crashed together. âThere!â He pointed through the bushes at the small river. Just visible upstream were two forms. They both rushed forward, Seral moving into the lead.
He came to a stop at the edge of the river, taking in the sight of his tziu on his knees in the water, not far from the bank. Sudden movement through the trees on the far shore caught his attention. His hand came up, his weapon ready to fire. He sighted on the moving form covered in bulky clothes.
He shot, taking the man in the throat.
âSeral! You want one alive.â
Holding up one hand, Seral waited. Heâd seen more movement, but a human wouldnât be able to see through the thick cover to know that their comrade had gone down, and the throat shot had ensured the human soldier died silently.
