I woke up in my bed the following morning. The day was cloudy and gray, with potential rain to come. The house felt eerily quiet, like the calm before a storm. I attempted to listen to the sounds coming from the other parts of the house, but there was nothing. Where was Corey? I needed to ask him how I ended up in my bed. I couldnât recall anything from last night. The last thing I remembered was that Corey was kissing me on his lawn.
I looked to the side and noticed the dress I was wearing last night sat on the floor. Beneath the bed covers, my body was naked. I pulled up the cover to my chin, embarrassed by the sight. I looked around to see where my undergarments went, but nothing was in my proximity. It was time to face Corey and confront him about this. And while I was at it, it was time to ask all the questions I had meant to ask all along.
I stole out of the bed and grabbed a new pair of underwear. I slipped on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and headed down to find Corey.
Fear and uncertainty gnawed at me as I walked down the stairs. A voice involuntarily came out of my mouth. âCorey.â My own screaming voice startled me as it echoed between the walls. âCorey.â
No response.
I entered the kitchen and walked a circle around the island. Maybe Corey left a note for me again, but I saw nothing. The kitchen looked different, but I couldnât tell what it was. Several objects were missing, but I never paid close enough attention to know which.
I screamed again, âCorey!â
Silence. The French door near the backyard was shut. I opened them and ran to the middle of the backyard, looking for Corey, but I didnât find him. It occurred to me to check if his BMW was still parked at the front. I ran and found nothing upon arrival. Corey had left without saying goodbye. He hadnât hung around to talk about what had happened between us last night. I thought it might have meant something to him when he kissed me passionately. He hadnât even let me know me how long heâd be away this time. Or where he was going to.
I felt a punch in my gut. Maybe Corey was an illusion last night. Was I losing my mind?
I couldnât remember much from last night. What happened to my memory? What was going on with me? I shook my head. This couldnât be real. And now, to learn that Corey would be gone for goodness knew how long was another reason to worry. Having no income, no job prospects, and no acting career in place, I felt doom looming in.
The walls closed in. I needed to get away from here before I lost what was left of my mind.
