Population Growth and DDT

At some point in the 1960s, David Brower, who was the executive director of the Sierra Club,368 and who, in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in 1998, was quoted as saying that "overpopulation is perhaps the biggest problem facing us,"369 encouraged Paul Ehrlich to write a book on the problems of human population growth. Ehrlich published his bestseller, The Population Bomb, in 1968. The main theme of his book was that human population growth was the root cause of society's modern environmental problems.370 Ehrlich conjured public fear by predicting dire scenarios of worldwide famines between 1970 and 1985 (none of which came true then or since).371 Perhaps overlooked by many who read the book, Ehrlich also picked up Carson's anti-DDT theme. In a May 1970 issue of Audubon, Ehrlich even warned that DDT and other chlorinated hydrocarbons "may have substantially reduced the life expectancy of people born since 1945."372 Fear tactics proved to be just as important in scaring people about population growth as they were in the war on pesticides. Ultimately, The Population Bomb promoted concerns that DDT caused rapid population growth as it reduced the burdens of malaria.
