Two Minutes Ago

Adrian sat tensely next to Nick, watching from their secure vantage point from across the street as Sorcha started to walk off with Declan.

“What the hell is she doing?” Nick asked. “Are they—"

Before Nick could finish his sentence, a gunshot rang out.

Adrian watched in horror as Declan dove in front of his sister, the bullet striking him in the chest. The few passersby around them scattered and screamed.

Adrian and Nick were out of the car in an instant, racing across the street and into the park toward Declan and Sorcha. Adrian scanned the direction that the shot had come from and spotted two men darting toward a car.

Nick raced after them as Adrian hurried over to Sorcha and Declan. Sorcha was crouched over her brother, who was alive but dangerously pale, his breathing ragged. Blood seeped from the bullet wound in the center of his chest. Sorcha was weeping, pressing her jacket to the wound.

“Hold on, Dec, please hold on,” Sorcha pleaded. She looked up at Adrian, her eyes wild with grief and desperation. “We have to get him help. I know a doctor I trust who can tend to him. Please, we don’t have much time!”
