A few weeks have passed with no further incidents. No dodgy emails. No random sightings of David. No visits to my neighbours. My HR manager, Kathy, has shown constant kindness by regularly checking in with me, yet she has taken no further action. And I appreciate her concern.

At first, I thought David lost interest in his game of cat and mouse, but now I’m more inclined to think that he’s taken his family with him to start that new job in Surrey. Though not relieved, I feel I can start rebuilding the shattered pieces of my broken life. The last few months have been nothing but hell, and it’s taken every ounce of willpower to get through every day. Anita hasn’t been able to visit because of work commitments, but she keeps in touch by calling me a few times a week to make sure I’m okay and I’ve told her everything including the cryptic email, my conversation with Kathy, and how I confronted David in church. Though I’m happy every time I hear her voice, I’m always left with sadness that she’s not here. I miss the impromptu coffee dates and catch-ups.

Mark has been my rock too. Even with his hectic schedule and occasional need to work away from home, he has lived up to his promise of being with me during every free moment that he has had. And tonight is no exception. He is treating me to a meal at Pizza Express in town. It’s a place we’ve been many times. The food is good; the atmosphere buzzy, and it’s a place where we can always relax.

We order dough balls and garlic butter to begin with. And once they arrive, we devour them.

I know Mark is busy at work, so I’m keen to find out what his plans are for the next few weeks. “When is this current contract finishing?”

Mark wipes his mouth and takes a sip from his Peroni beer. “I reckon we’ve got a week to go. Unfortunately, our next contract is over in Bury St Edmunds. We’ve had the electrical works subbed out to us on an office refurb. It might mean I have to stay over a few nights a week to work late as we’re on a tight schedule.”

“Oh.” I look down at my drink and sigh, not enjoying the sinking feeling inside.

He reaches across and holds my hand. “Hey, listen. It will only be two or three weeks max. And I’ll come back as much as I can. I might have to do a few weekends; I don’t know. But the more hours we put in, the quicker the job gets done. You understand, don’t you?”

I nod. It's wrong of me to expect him to give up his work for me, but I can't help feeling selfish. But perhaps things will be okay now. “I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

We brush our conversation to one side as the pizzas arrive. I enjoy each mouthful and there’s little conversation between us as we both tuck in.
