CHAPTER THREE

Self-Defense

"You remember the guy who used to work here?" asked the man in the chair. "His name was like Cain or something like that." His voice was casual, but Jason did not get a casual impression from him.

"Hmmm... Not sure." Jason screwed up his eyes as he snuck a glance at the man in the mirror. He covered up his expression by pretending to be looking at the man's hair very closely, to see if it was straight and even around his ear. He trimmed a little bit with the scissors.

The man shrugged. "Oh. Well, if you see him, tell him he's got something waiting for him."

"Oooh, sounds exciting," Jason said. "I hope it's a big hard dick." He laughed at his own joke, which made everyone else in the shop laugh too, everyone except the man in Jason's chair. He was a black man in a suit; he didn't seem like he really fit in here, though there was no obvious reason why.

Could he be a cop? Possibly, but he didn't exactly look like one. He was a bit of a prettyboy, in a fine Italian suit, perfectly tailored to his size. His hair was immaculate too -- that was the first thing that Jason had found suspicious: the man was in no need of a haircut, but here he was paying Jason for a trim.

"I'm not a cop," said the man with a faint trace of a Haitian accent, "if that's what you're thinking. He's not in trouble. It's a good thing. He'll be glad you told him about me." He handed over a business card. Alain Wavéré. Beneath that, it read Archdiocese of Halifax. There was an email address and a phone number.

That was it. He didn't say anything else, just sat there stiffly while Jason finished cutting his already-trimmed hair.

The man, Mr. Wavéré, walked out after placing two twenty-dollar bills on the counter. That was well more than the haircut cost, and since he hadn't needed a haircut in the first place, that equated to about a dollar per millimeter of hair cut.

Everyone silently looked at Jason. Mr. Wavéré had not spoken to anyone but Jason, aside from telling the others that he was waiting for Jason's chair to be empty. It was obvious he had come here to speak to Jason. He had looked very out of place, and conversation had died down while he was in the shop -- just like when a cop came in, the whole place turned into a mausoleum and everyone just waited until the cop left. Mr. Wavéré was even more offputting, though Jason did have a feeling he was telling the truth about not being a cop. Pretending to be a suited Haitian priest would have been a bizarre undercover plan.

Jason just shrugged. "Whatever. Probably a cop," he said because he thought the others expected an excuse from him, and it was the closest thing to a reasonable excuse he could come up with. He thought to himself, a weird cop in a fine suit, pretending to be.
