The trains approaching London Bridge thrummed and clattered overhead, masking what Annabel was saying. David had to lean close, although, on a Saturday, they were already pressed firmly together, in the jostling hordes of Borough Market.

Sean had brought them to another of London’s ‘hidden’ attractions, enthusing about its seafood stalls, ostrich burgers and pulled pork sandwiches. For once, however, their guide had miscalculated, and at the weekend, the sheer number of tourists made the warren of grey passages hellish. They were forced to shuffle, arms tucked defensively into their bodies, like Hong Kong commuters or revellers at a music festival, and everyone’s temper was short.

“I said…”

Annabel raised her voice.

“I can’t take much more of this. Tell Sean we need to get out.”

“Already working on it.”

Miraculously, Sean heard.

“Sorry, guys; this is crazy. We’ll come back on a Wednesday, or something.”

Borough Market was tucked under a colossal rail bridge, its steel girders lost in the gloom, like the arches of some Industrial Age cathedral. The stalls looked fascinating: whole monkfish glared monstrously at them from piles of ice; terrines and game pies beckoned from inside display cabinets; and hanging over everything was the saliva-inducing aroma of roasted chestnuts and provincial cheeses. Sean led them along seemingly contradictory routes, threading the narrow maze, until they emerged next to the Thames, breathing a collective sigh of relief.

“Where did they all come from?”

Sean laughed.

“Fuck, I need a drink. Will this pub do?”

Once they were seated, Sean explained that further along this embankment was Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, or, by crossing the river, they’d enter The City, London’s financial powerhouse, which “would definitely be empty at the weekend.”

“Take us to one of the parks, Sean,” Annabel begged.

She played with her i-phone, updating a running commentary of places she and David had been, while her boyfriend looked down at the screen, amused.

“Having a glass of wine, LOL,” he mimicked. “Crossing the road, LOL. Got hit by a car while putting every inane detail of my life on Twitter. OMG, ROFL. ”

“Fuck off,” Annabel smiled. “You know I do it to wind people up.”

“And you succeed brilliantly, darling.”

“Oh, sod them. Real friends should be happy I’m enjoying life, not jealous.”

“We have a lot of acquaintances rather than friends,” David explained.

“I can’t be bothered now,” Jen stated. “Life’s too short to put up with someone just because you went to school with them.”

“I’m getting selfish in my thirties.” Sean backed his girlfriend’s argument. “I have to really like people to spend time with them.”

“Awww!”

Clowning a little, Annabel nudged David.

“You hear that, Baby?”

“The four of us have just clicked,” Sean admitted, without embarrassment. “But let’s not get too sentimental…”

“Deal!”

Annabel laughed.

“We need more drinks.”

“What’s that famous line?”

David squinted as he recalled. “It’s the friends you can call at 4.00 a.m. that matter?”

“Marlene Dietrich.” Sean finished the quote.
