Superiority

Social Identity Theory predicts that the categorization process leads to prejudicial and discriminatory attitudes toward the out group. Superiority in Taiwanese identity has existed since the second stage of its development, due to the Japanese colonial legacy and the difference in value. In recent years, media propaganda has greatly reinforced the superiority, which is entrenched in Taiwanese society. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of YouTubers also joined the media effort to harden the superiority. For example, the Nas Daily, a Facebook video channel with 17M followers run by an Israeli-Arab blogger, published two videos titled “Asia’s Secret Countries” and “Why this Country is a Coronavirus Hero” during August 2019 and May 2020. The two videos received 2.7M and 16M views, respectively. Thousands of comments appeared from Taiwanese people expressing their pride in being Taiwanese and from foreigners to praise Taiwan. In addition to the recognition from YouTubers, global politicians and journalists published articles and journals urging Taiwan’s participation in the WHO given its public health success and for the sake of global health. All these reports and video reinforced the superiority within Taiwanese society (Figure 5).
