Blinding

Blinding: the study group that individuals have been allocated to is not known (for example, whether they have been allocated to receive an experimental drug or a placebo). This prevents the outcome of the experiment being influenced by individuals knowing which group particular participants are in (Nelson et al. 2015).

single blinding: the research participant does not know which group they are in, but the researcher knows which person has which intervention. With single blinding, the researcher knowing which group participants are in could result in them inadvertently treating them differently, or interpreting their results in a particular way.

Double blinding: neither the researcher nor the person involved in the experiment knows which study group they are in (Nelson et al. 2015).
