Exercise Performance Supplements

Pre-Workout Supplement: For me, the name of the game here is boosting focus, enhancing mental energy and clarity and boosting the mind-muscle connection. Because I’m sensitive to caffeine, I prefer a non-caffeinated formulation, but that is up to you. My favorite product is Genius Preworkout. It has legitimate, branded and science-backed nootropics like alpha-GPC, taurine, huperzine A and tyrosine; citrulline and arginine for blood flow; HICA for muscle protein synthesis; betaine, ATP and beta-alanine for strength and power; and adaptogens like rhodiola. If you need the type of boost you can only get from stimulants, you can add caffeine or, better still, the ingredients I co-patented, TeaCrine and Dynamine. Genius Consciousness contains caffeine, Dynamine and eight other brain-boosting ingredients. Combined with Pre, it could be the ultimate pre-workout stack.

Electrolytes: Replacing electrolytes lost during intense exercise is just as important as rehydrating, and this may be even more important for folks on keto and other low-carbohydrate diets. I look for formulas that contain, at a minimum, sodium (as bicarbonate), potassium and magnesium. Onnit, Thorne and LMNT are all good choices.

Nootropics: I mentioned this above, but some of my favorite pre-workout nootropics are alpha-GPC, lion’s mane, tyrosine, taurine, acetyl-L-carnitine, huperzine A and creatine.

Beta-Alanine: Beta-alanine is an amino acid that promotes and maintains muscle endurance and output and helps boost athletic performance. It can even enhance mental focus and may help build muscle faster. Look for the CarnoSyn brand of beta-alanine and use 3.2-6.4g daily.

BAIBA: BAIBA is a myokine, also referred to as an “exercise factor” or “exercise mimetic.” It plays a powerful role in the many benefits of regular exercise (e.g., increased glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation), but it can also facilitate the “browning” of fat tissue, which can lead to increased metabolic rate and fat burning. Look for MitoBurn, the branded version of BAIBA. I use 750-2000 mg pre-workout.

Grains of Paradise (GOP): GOP has been shown to activate BAT, which is a unique type of fat tissue that burns extra calories to generate heat. Activating BAT can help increase metabolic rate, fat burning and glucose disposal. Look for CaloriBurn GP, the branded version of GOP. I use 40-80 mg twice a day.

Carbs: As a keto guy, I have found that consuming a small amount (~17 grams) of carbs before workouts can be tremendously helpful for performance and recovery. While there are some innovative ingredients (e.g., modified starches), something as simple as dextrose can get the job done. Even more interesting is data on “carb rinsing”—that is, swishing something like Gatorade in your mouth and spitting it out—which may have a benefit without consuming the sugar/carbs.

L-Citrulline: While arginine gets most of the love as a nitric oxide (NO) booster, l-citrulline is my go-to supplement when it comes to supporting NO production, blood flow and exercise performance. I prefer L-citrulline over citrulline malate and I usually look for a dose of six grams.

Nitrates: Speaking of NO production, dietary nitrates—such as those from beets and beetroot (300-500 mg)—can also help raise NO levels, maximize blood flow and improve athletic performance.
