The Afghan officer named Hosseini coughed as he emerged from the emergency hatch of the smoke-filled BTR.

That damned gunner must have an uncanny ability to hit impossible targets.

He could see their well-prepared attack falling apart almost before it had begun. His plan was simple, to race out onto the tarmac, and destroy as many fighter aircraft as they could find, leaving them in flames. As the defenders rushed out into the open to deal with the destruction, they’d turn back and hit them hard on the second pass, killing as many as possible. A victory for the Taliban, and when they left, the Americans would understand the strength of the enemy they faced.

He ran around the side of the hangar, in time to see the second BTR destroyed by a shoulder-launched missile. Smoke and flames poured out of the wreckage, and as a crewman attempted to escape, a stream of American bullets cut him down before he could reach the ground. Further away, a unit of Afghans was racing into the battle, and he knew it was all over. They’d lost their armor, taken heavy casualties, and the surprise attack had failed. All that remained was a last action to salvage something from the battle. Something important. Himself.

He pulled off his snow camos, and beneath he wore the uniform of a Lieutenant Colonel of the Afghan National Army. Afghan troops were getting close, and he ran toward them.

“What are you men doing?”

The lieutenant in charge looked confused. “Sir, they ordered us to guard the hangars.”

“Forget the hangars.” His expression was fierce, “There are insurgents still on base. I want them found and killed.”

“What about prisoners, Colonel?”

“No prisoners. Kill them all.”

“All of them?”

“All.”

“Yessir.”

They raced off, and a moment later, he heard the sound of renewed firing.

Excellent, once they’ve killed the rest of the survivors, those who haven’t escaped, I’ll be safe. Dead men tell no tales.

He saw another Afghan unit hurrying toward the control tower, and he hastened toward them. He’d join them, and when they conducted an investigation, he could honestly say he’d done everything possible to fight off the attack.
