Monday morning, Skylar’s presence in the front row of the lecture hall was distracting. My eyes wandered of their own accord, and I caught myself staring at him more than once. The worst part was how many times I floundered with my notes and lost track of what I was saying. Marianne, who had decided to sit in on a few classes since she had the time, had to correct me when I wound up off track.

A snicker rolled through the assembled students after the third time I confused dates and swore right into the mic, making it resonate around the silent room. It was a disaster.

I was sweltering. My tie was choking me, and more than once, I fought the urge to loosen it or take it off altogether.

At the top of the hour, I’d never been happier to dismiss the class.

While the students filtered out, I spared an inconspicuous glance toward Skylar who happened to be doing the same while he packed up his belongings. When our eyes locked, heat bloomed under my skin.

“I’ll get the notes and PowerPoints put together before Friday. You can go over them and see if you have any questions.”

“Not a problem. I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

Back in my office, Marianne sorted through whatever work she had waiting for her while I stared blankly at my laptop. My phone sat on the desk beside me, taunting me as I contemplated sending Skylar a text to see if he’d like to meet up later.

To talk about Morgan because I promised.

But I wasn’t fooling myself. That might have been part of the reason, but it wasn’t the whole truth. There was something freeing about Skylar. His personality was a breath of fresh air in my gloomy world. It was like opening a window that had been sealed shut for too long and letting the breeze clear the poisonous cloud that had settled all around me. Skylar’s presence in my apartment made it almost impossible for darkness to reign, like they couldn’t coexist together. One chased the other away.

It didn’t hurt that he was young and attractive.

It didn’t hurt that he was willing to fuck around with a guy almost twice his age without needing a commitment.

Even when he looked at me knowingly, like he could see the
